市街地南部に位置する亀山（標高66m）を利用し、縄張りはほぼ四角形で亀山の廻りを堀で囲む輪郭式の平山城。石垣は緩やかであるが荒々しい野面積みと端整な算木積みの土台から、頂は垂直になるよう独特の反りを持たせる「扇の勾配」となっている。山麓から山頂まで4重に重ねられ、総高60mの石垣は日本一高く]、三の丸石垣だけで一番高い部分は22メートルある。頂部の本丸には江戸時代に建てられた御三階櫓が現存する

城好きの中では「現存12天守の一つ！」として超有名なお城ですが、天守閣としてはとても小さく地味。ただし縄張りは内堀でもなかり広く、城の縄張り造りとしては想像力をかきたてられる魅力満載のおしろです。石垣もしかり。城好きが満足し堪能出来る逸品。

ここ丸亀城からは、丸亀市街はもちろん、瀬戸内海・瀬戸大橋・本州倉敷市まで一望することができます。本当に素晴らしいの一言！
