Arenbergkasteel: exterior view of front facade towards the west by Penn State Libraries Pictures Collection
Title: Arenbergkasteel
Other title: Castle Arenberg; Arenberg Castle; Kasteel van Arenberg; Arenberg Chateau
Date: late 15th to 16th century (construction on site of older structure) 19th century (renovations)
Current location: Heverlee, Vlaams-Brabant, Flanders, Belgium
Description of work: In the 1440s an original castle at this site came into the possession the House of Croy. Construction on a new structure lasted from the late 15th century through the 16th century. In the 17th century the castle passed to the House of Arenberg. In the early 20th century the Duke of Arenberg passed ownership of the castle and grounds to the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (Catholic University Leuven) (Source: Langouche, Guido, Mark Derez and Anne Verbrugge. The Celestine Priory at Leuven: From Monastery to Library. Leuven: Leuven University Press, 2005. p. 18-20). The Engineering and Architecture departments currently (2014) utilize the structure. As a result of centuries of reconstruction and renovation projects the castle now displays a mixture of styles including characteristics of Gothic Revival and Flemish Renaissance. Specific regional architectural elements of the Flemish Renaissance style include the combination of sandstone and brick, use of dormers, step gables and attention to decoration. The building is anchored by two square towers topped with distinctive pear-shaped ornaments.
Description of view: View of green tree in front of tower and large red brick building with dormers, step gables and ornamentation.
