Photos of Adam's Peak

Adam's Peak by Felix Krohn

Sri Pada after the descent - which is much more strenuous than the ascent. Arrived back at the hotel (The "White House" in Dalhousie). The way up to the peak is comfortably laid out with mostly concrete steps, more than 5000 of them (doesn't look that high, huh?) that wind up the steep slope. Luckily you start in the night, so you can't read the numbers engraved from time to time :-) On the top is a holy footstep, the climb represents a pilgrimage to Buddhists, Hindus, Christians and Muslims who recognize that footstep as the left by Buddha, Shiva or Adam respectively when arriving/leaving this world. Due to this there are not only many tourists in walking boots, but also some hundred (mostly buddhist, I reckon) Sri Lankans in Flipflops - every day. Many go up there several times in their life. Some, like the post man or the guides, nearly every day! Non-religious persons still have a few reasons to hike up: a magnificent view on the surrounding countryside with hills and lakes, and during sunrise the shadow of the peak itself stretches to the western horizon.
Adam's Peak (සිංහල: සමනල කන්ද) is a tourist attraction, one of the Sacred mountains in Sitagangula, Sri Lanka. It is located: 42 km from Hatton, 53 km from Ratnapura, 220 km from Colombo. Read further
