Frida Kahlo - La Venadita - The Little Deer - 1946 - Louisiana Museum of Modern Art by Cederskjold - The Dane
Louisiana Museum of Modern Art: "A deer wounded by nine arrows with Kahlo’s thorny-crowned head walks through a leafless forest and looks directly at the viewer. As in many of her self-portraits, symbols of Mexico’s indigenous cultures are combined with elements that may be interpreted in Christological terms: Thus, the arrows may be interpreted as attributes of Saint Sebastian, their numbering nine symbolizing the Divine in Eastern traditions, while the stag – again with nine points of the antlers – in Aztec teachings represents the right foot, which was the one where Kahlo’s disability was most evident."
