The Upper Belvedere and the Lower Belvedere (named for their location on a slope rising south of the city at that time) form a baroque ensemble with the connecting gardens. The two palace buildings now house the collections of the Belvedere (Österreichische Galerie Belvedere) and rooms for temporary exhibitions. On May 15, 1955, the Austrian State Treaty was signed in the Upper Belvedere.
