Episode Of The Buffalo Gun by pecooper98362

Artist Frederic S. Remington, American, 1861-1909 Oil on Canvas, 1909 One of the Museum art lecturers was mentioning that she was doing a tour of paintings where the landscape was an important element and really felt that she should include something from the Remington collection. Abruptly, she turned to me and asked me which one of the paintings I thought had the most powerful landscape. I looked at all the paintings and pointed to this one. Why this one? I pointed out that it went from mountains to the river valley, having a strong vertical element, and that the river flowed away into the distance, drawing you into the picture. You had the action in the foreground, but the landscape acted almost as another character. I convinced her, too. Around the turn of the century, Frederic Remington adopted the bright colors and loose brushwork of Impressionism. Toward the end of his life, he experimented with increasingly riotous color and vigorous brush strokes that made the paint surface shimmer and vibrate. Here, Native Americans recoil in surprise from the long-range shot of a weapon called a buffalo gun. Its bullets leave a trail of dust at the left. This is Houston, Texas. Of course there are going to be paintings by Remington. After purchasing his first Remington in 1920 in New York City, Will Hogg continued to locate and purchase other works by the artist to build one of the most important collections of Remingtons known today. Miss Ima Hogg donated the Hogg brother's collection of works by Remington to the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, in 1943.
