Fort Moultrie - July 1985 by Stabbur's Master

Fort Moultrie is located on Sullivan's Island in South Carolina and is part of the Fort Sumter National Monument. The first fort, of palmetto logs, was built in 1776 to protect Charleston. The fort inspired the flag and nickname of South Carolina, "The Palmetto State". It is named for the commander in the Battle of Sullivan's Island, General William Moultrie. The present-day brick fort is the third built at the site. It was completed in 1809. It was decommissioned in 1947 and transferred to the National Park System in 1960. Fort Moultrie has been restored to portray the major periods of its history, back to the original palmetto-log fort of 1776. It is the only part of the National Park System where the entire 171-year history of American seacoast defense (1776–1947) can be traced. We visited the fort in July 1985.
